Joe’s leadership consulting and workshops focus on 12 themes:

  • Who we are as leaders is largely defined by our context – our gender, our childhood, the degree to which we have a sense of duty to our organization, and how we landed in our leadership roles. The best leaders have honed their origin stories, and understand what's fact and myth, as well as the benefits and watch-outs.

  • Leadership guru Warren Bennis is credited with the insight: becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself. In other words, being your true, authentic self is what empowers you to be an effective leader.

  • Every leader has styles of leadership — participative, collaborative, autocratic, situational, directive, to name a few — and the best leaders understand the strengths and watch-outs of their styles of leadership.

  • The best leaders are world-class observers, capable of recognizing insights about people and situations that others are blind to, and then acting on those insights.

  • The best leaders understand the currency of trust, the asset of credibility, and the power that comes with extending trust.

  • The best leaders know when — and when not — to make decisions, and have frameworks for how they go about making better decisions, faster.

  • The best leaders have honed the skill of giving effective direction and feedback, and they actively seek critical feedback from their followers.

  • The best leaders say "no" more than they say "yes," and they prioritize how they invest their time, balancing the urgent with the important.

  • The best leaders have command of their business — how key stakeholders define financial success, how profits are generated, and how cost centers are evaluated.

  • The best leaders are "good in a room" and know how to influence others to accomplish their goals.

  • The best leaders believe their own talents — and the talents of their team — can be developed, and they worry less about looking smart and put more energy into learning.

  • The best leaders have defined values, consistently put their values into practice, and ruthlessly defend their values — choosing courage over comfort, and doing what's right over what's convenient or easy.
